Question for you, Greenville: What should go into the City Hall space? Johnston Design Group has an idea. This conceptual design reimagines Greenville’s City Hall as a space combining art, municipal government, and entrepreneurship. The facility would be LEED Platinum certified (read: sustainably built) + incorporate solar panels into its design.

The history of Greenville's City Hall
Last year, plans to move City Hall to a new downtown building did not come to fruition. Originally, the city planned to move operations to the former Bowater Building (near Falls Park). Negotiations ended in November 2021.
The bottom line: City leaders say City Hall — as it is now — does not have the space to keep up with business needs, and maintenance on the aging building could require $5.75 million over the next eight years.
When the Bowater deal fell through, Mayor Knox White said the city remains open to moving government operations out of the current building — though the city has not yet made a decision about moving or renovating. He said the city wants to see what investors might do with the property. And so, the spot on Main Street remains up for innovation. |
|
|
What should happen to the space? Whether City Hall moves to a new location or remains in place, change is always possible. What do you think about Johnston Design Group's suggestion to reimagine the current structure as a modern space for tech entrepreneurs? Would you want to see something else in the building located in the heart of Downtown Greenville at Main Street's center?

With 140 active routes across Greenville County, Meals on Wheels of Greenville (MOWGVL) requires 140 delivery volunteers per day to deliver daily nutrition and personal connection to ~1,500 homebound individuals. |

One such delivery volunteer is Ed Irick, who has been a MOWGVL volunteer for 11 years. He and his wife Carol both deliver weekly. They've also enlisted organizations they are a part of — the Reedy River Rotary Club and Eastminster Presbyterian Church — to volunteer as groups, both in the MOWGVL lobby and out on delivery.
We asked Ed why someone should sign up to volunteer, his favorite part of interacting with clients along his delivery route, and more. Q: What made you want to begin volunteering originally? A: Just a sense of service and wanting to help our community. My wife and I are at that point in our lives where we have the time to give back more, and we want to be of service to others. We both also really like Meals on Wheels, and delivering has turned into this shared activity we truly enjoy doing together.* |

Editor’s pick: Greenville seems to shuffle City Hall around a bit. My favorite in a long line of city halls is (the appropriately named) Old Greenville City Hall, built in 1889 as a US Courthouse and Post Office + demolished in 1973. We like to keep our municipal buildings fresh in GVL.
