The Urban League of the Upstate, a nonprofit serving the local Black community, will take over the McClaren Medical Shelter (located at Academy + Wardlaw Streets) with plans to turn it into a community-focused health and wellness center.
The little brick building, built in 1949, has a lot of history. Dr. Edward E. McClaren used $15,000 of his own money to start the health care facility. He treated many of his patients for free after they were turned away from local hospitals when Greenville was segregated.
The Urban League plans to work with Upstate partners like Prisma Health, Bon Secours, USC Upstate + Clemson University at the new center, which will follow the National Urban Leagueās Project Wellness Programs.
