For a city bursting with personality, it’s no shock that Greenville boasts a few unique traits. So, as people who spend our days learning everything we can about our city, we decided to put together a list of 10 things you might not know about Greenville.
1.) Woodside Mill, built in 1902, was once the largest textile mill under one roof in the world. As the mill’s business grew, so did the village that developed around it (now known as the Woodside Cotton Mill Village Historic District, a nationally-registered historic area). Earlier this year, The Lofts at Woodside Mill apartments opened, and now residents are able to enjoy living in a piece of major Greenville history.
2.) The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is the first children’s museum in the country to be an affiliate of the Smithsonian. The Upcountry History Museum is also a Smithsonian affiliate, meaning they’re able to share collections and exhibits, education strategies, and research within the affiliate system.
3.) Albert Einstein’s son called Greenville home. Einstein’s son, Hans Albert Einstein + his wife, lived on Randall Street in the North Main area of Greenville for five years in the late 1930s. The younger Einstein worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and Clemson University, and took his father, Albert, on tours of Furman when he visited from Princeton University. Hans Einstein’s son passed away and was buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park. #MUSTDO

We’re feelin’ a little festive with this throwback caption thanks to our talented friend, James Simpson.
James says, “Imagine if you will, it’s 1925 and the first eight story skyscraper just opened in Greenville, SC. You and your family traveled all day in your Model ‘T’ to get here for a business trip and also to enjoy the Christmas Holidays here in the Upstate. It’s cold & snowy ❄️ outside and you enter the lobby of this new skyscraper and are welcomed by this. Your destination? The Poinsett Hotel on South Main Street in Greenville!🎄🙌 📸”

Editor's Pick: Speaking of pretending like it's 1925...the year 1925 was a big one for development in Greenville. Go back in time to see the some of the iconic local landmarks that were built that year — some still standing, some not.
